As at 31 May 1998, 26,025 Australian Workplace Agreements (AWAs) have been received by the OEA.

Of these agreements:

  • 17,697 have been approved by the Employment Advocate, covering 590 employers; and
  • 2,828 have been either refused or withdrawn.

During May alone the OEA approved 3,853 AWAs.

AWAs approved to date have overwhelmingly been concerned with increasing labour flexibility through hours of work provisions and changing overtime and weekend penalty systems.

Other innovations include placing a greater emphasis on career structure and development by providing: a wide range of skilled classification levels; the introduction of bonus systems; annualised salaries; and, "quarterly performance benefits" if the work site achieves its targets.
