10% of all federal agreements approved in the fourth quarter of 1997 were made under the non-union agreement making provisions of the Workplace Relations Act 1996(s170LK).

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (ACCI) recently released quarterly report of federal agreements certified in the fourth quarter of 1997 show that there has been an increase in the use of the non-union bargaining options available under the federal Workplace Relations Act (1996). This not only applies to agreements made under s170LK of the Act but also to Australian Workplace Agreements.

The ACCI report for the fourth quarter has also found that the average annual wage increase for agreements certified in the quarter was 4.5% which is only slightly higher than the previous quarter (4.4%).

Average wage increases in the agriculture, construction, manufacturing, hospitality and transport industries exceeded the overall average, whilst increases in the mining, printing and food manufacturing industries were below the average.

Over the coming weeks, HR Link will detail some of the more innovative clauses highlighted in the report. Subscribers wishing to purchase a copy of the report should contact Gabby Della at ACCI on (03) 9289 5289.
