Less than half of employees are aware of the new fairness test, and only three in 10 have been given copies of the workplace relations fact sheet, according to the latest Sensis Consumer Report.

To compile the report 1,500 Australians were interviewed from 3 to 23 August.

63% don't like WorkChoices

The report found that 31% of Australians agreeing in principle with the current workplace relations system, while 63% disagree.

About six in 10 Australians believe the workplace relations system has either a positive impact or has no impact at all. The main reasons for these views are:

  • a belief it was now possible to negotiate a good deal
  • that the unions previously had too much say
  • that good workers can be rewarded

Just less than one third of Australians believe the workplace relations system has had a negative impact. The main reasons for this view are:

  • a perception that employees lose their rights
  • the changes were good for employers
  • wages would be cut

The compilers of the report said they had not seen a lot of awareness about the new fairness test provisions introduced by the Government.

‘Currently less than half of employees are aware of the new fairness test,' report author Christena Singh said. ‘And of some concern, only three in 10 employees had been provided with the workplace relations fact sheet, which by law is required to be handed out by 20 October this year.'

Job satisfaction

Despite many changes occurring in the workplace environment in recent times, Australians appear to have a high level of job satisfaction.

The September Sensis Consumer Report shows Australians have a job satisfaction rating of 7.12 out of a possible 10.

The main reasons employees like their current jobs are:

  • flexible job/good work/life balance (27%)
  • type of work they do (16%)
  • people they worked with (15%)
  • pay (10%)
  • location (5%)

The main reasons employees dislike their current job are:

  • too long hours (12%)
  • too little pay (7%)
