OHS and hours of work are the most common types of provisions in federally certified agreements according to the latest report on enterprise bargaining trends.

Occupational health and safety provisions were in 88% of all agreements and hours of work were in 91% of agreements.

OHS and hours were also the most common types in the Transport and Storage industry. But while hours of work provisions featured in the same proportion of T&S agreements compared to all industries (both 91%), slightly fewer T&S agreements (81%) contained OHS provisions.

John Allan, Federal Secretary of the Transport Workers Union, said he was surprised by the figures. He said it was his union's policy that 'all federal transport industry agreements contained OHS provisions that referred to national transport laws and OHS legislation'. The TWU provisions also allow for unions to initiate dispute procedures over a safety issue, he said.

The T&S sector covers maritime, road, rail, air and warehousing and storage, and Allan said he couldn't comment on agreements negotiated by the multiple unions in these areas.

Allan said he is currently working with a national committee on introducing new restrictions on hours for drivers to deal with fatigue and OHS issues. Further details should be available later next month.
