Who is making awas?

Approximately 21,000 Australian Workplace Agreements (AWAs) were approved by the Office of the Employment Advocate during 1997-98. This has allowed the Employment Advocate to collect a range of data about the workplaces and the employees covered.

 

Employer information

17% of employers who had AWAs approved in 1997-98 came from the government administration and defence sector. This was followed closely by the manufacturing sector with 14% of employers and health and community services with 12%.

Further, 38% of AWAs made in the 1997-98 period covered employers from Victoria. New South Wales follows close behind with 22% of employers coming from that State.

Employee information

  • 82% of AWAs covered existing employees (only 18% were for new employees).
  • 60% of employees covered by AWAs approved in 1997-98 were male
  • 81% of employees covered by AWAs approved in 1997-98 were working full-time.
  • 44% of employees with AWAs are managers.
