Australian human resources practitioners require knowledge of a wide range of employment-related legislation. The federal Fair Work Act 2009 is most important because of its provision of minimum employment standards for all Australian workers, as well as its coverage of important issues such as termination of employment and industrial relations. However, state and territory legislation applies in areas such as EEO and discrimination, WHS/OHS (the harmonised national system commenced on 1 January 2012), and workers compensation.
