The Senate Economics References Committee has received well over 500 written submissions for its inquiry into the federal Workplace Relations and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 1996 by the deadline of Friday, 28 June 1996.

The Committee will now travel around the country asking a number of the parties who made written submissions to talk further on those submissions. The Committee will be hearing verbal submissions at the following locations: 4-5 July, Melbourne; 8 July, Hobart; 9 July, Launceston; 10-11, regional Victoria and New South Wales; 15-16 July, Sydney; 17 July, Brisbane; 18 July, Townsville; 19 July, Cairns; 23 July, Darwin; 24-25 July, Perth and regional WA; 29-30 July, Adelaide; and, 31 July and 1 August, Canberra.

By current indications, the future prospects of the Bill rest with the Democrats. The Democrats have stated that they will not stop the passage of the Bill but that they are yet to decide on their position. They will be looking to do so by late August or sometime in September.

Note that the Bill was passed by the House of Representatives last Wednesday, 26 June 1996.
