The Workplace Relations (Registration and Accountability of Organisations) Act 2002 and related legislation generally came into effect on 12 May 2003.

The legislation is designed to:
  1. incorporate in one instrument all legislative provisions relating to the registration, deregistration, amalgamation and disamalgamation of registered organisations;
  2. regulate the rules of these organisations;
  3. provide for improved democratic control of organisations by regulating the conduct of elections for positions in organisations, and providing criteria for disqualification from office in an organisation;
  4. improve the accountability of registered organisations by modernising the requirements for record-keeping, financial reporting, and access to financial records;
  5. regulate the conduct of officers and employees of registered organisations; and
  6. provide for penalties, including civil penalties and civil compensation, with respect to breaches of the provisions of the Act.
