The Federal Government plans to boost employee ownership of company shares.

The Government announced in its 2003-2004 Budget that it will allocate $1.7 million over four years to fund the initiative.

It will also establish an Employee Share Ownership Development Unit within the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.

The initiative is focused on workers, not just executives. Share schemes will be encouraged in all sizes and types of businesses.

The unit will:
  • work with employers and employees to design and implement share schemes;
  • provide information and raise awareness of the benefits of employee share ownership; and
  • collect information for ongoing policy development.

For more information go to the Nelson report and the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations website.
