The Federal Government's Workplace Relations Amendment (Termination of Employment) Bill 2002 passed the House of Representatives last Thursday, 15 May 2003.

This Bill aims to extend federal unfair dismissal laws to all claims against corporations, thus reducing the jurisdiction of State industrial tribunals.

A Senate committee has reported on the Bill. The Democrats support some aspects of the Bill - particularly the jurisdictional aspects that would result in the majority of unfair dismissal matters going to the AIRC.

The Bill is likely to come back to the Senate before the conclusion of the current parliamentary session (end of June 2003).
