Internet jobs ads fell February

Job advertisements on the internet fell by 4.3 per cent in February.

The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations internet vacancy index declined to a seasonally adjusted 63.7 points in the month.

The index was 25.5 per cent lower than a year ago, and in trend terms, internet job ads are at their lowest since the series began in January 2006.

All eight of the occupational groups monitored by the department fell in February.

The biggest monthly declined was a seven per cent fall in demand for labourers, followed by a 6.9 per cent drop for clerical and administrative workers.

Next in Federal Govt jobs plan

A key initiative of the Gillard Government’s $1 billion Plan for Australian Jobs is the Australian Jobs Act. A draft Bill has just been released for public comment.

The legislation will require Australian Industry Participation (AIP) Plans for all projects with a capital expenditure of $500 million or more, to help Australian firms win work on large domestic projects and in global supply chains.

It will also establish a new Australian Industry Participation Authority to ensure Australian businesses have access and support in winning business from major projects.

Under the legislation, businesses which refuse to comply with AIP requirements and provide fair access to Australian suppliers will face strengthened compliance provisions. The new Authority will also be able to seek court orders to ensure compliance with the legislation.

NDIS Bill through Parliament

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Bill has passed the Parliament on 20 March.

The Bill establishes the National Disability Insurance Scheme and the NDIS Launch Transition Agency (the Agency) to deliver the launch of the scheme.

Around 26,000 people with significant and permanent disabilities, their families and carers, will be involved in the first stage of the NDIS. The Gillard Government has provided $1 billion to launch the NDIS from 1 July this year.

New inquiry into 457 visa rules

Independent Senator for South Australia, Nick Xenophon, has successfully moved for a Senate inquiry into the use of 457 visas in Australia on 20 March.

The inquiry, to be held by the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee, will look into the role of 457 visas in the Australian workforce, current skills shortages and whether there are appropriate workplace rights protections for people working under these visas.

HR Practices Day — presented by AHRI

HR Practices Day is a nationwide series of informative and interactive conferences, allowing participants to learn from the initiatives and experiences of leading practitioners in the profession.

The conferences are organised by AHRI and will focus on the development of delegate skills in various HR specialist areas with a particular emphasis on the application of best practice. The following components have been employed to shape the events:

  • the inclusion of high-profile experts on key HR areas
  • HR in practice case studies that will include best practice examples
  • interactive sessions focusing on skills development and application.

HR Practices Day provides an opportunity for both delegates and sponsors to network personally with generalist HR practitioners, consultants, operational line managers, team leaders and professionals responsible for people/organisational matters.

The Practices Days run from 14 March to 30 April at venues around Australia. For details and to register click here.
