Four out of five small businesses say they’re not ready for the introduction of the new workplace laws, with more than one-half concerned about the changed laws (many of which come into effect on 1 July) according to new research.

The AMR Interactive research, commissioned by Telstra Business, found that while small businesses were well aware of the new IR laws, 45% were either unprepared or uncertain about the changes and their potential impact.

Key findings

Key findings of the research are:
  • Three-quarters (76%) of businesses surveyed were aware of the proposed changes.
  • 53% stated being either 'somewhat' or 'very' concerned about the proposed changes.
  • The most noted cause for concern was the likelihood that the changes would increase business expenses (48%).
  • Furthermore, 42% were concerned about increased union power and 38% about changes to unfair dismissal laws.
  • Over one-third (37%) think they have poor to no understanding of their obligations under the upcoming scheme.
  • One-third think it will have a negative impact (32%) on their business, and one-third think it will make no difference at all (37%).
  • One-quarter (24%) are uncertain about the impact on their business.
  • Few businesses (7%) think the IR changes will have a positive impact on their business.
  • While just over one-half (55%) feel they are at least partly prepared for the changes, close to one-third (29%) feel they are not prepared at all, and 16% are uncertain.
  • Close to one-half (46%) of businesses currently have no systems in place to manage the new IR laws.
  • The majority of businesses (62%) surveyed would use a Federal Government website to find out more about the IR changes.
