NSW Public sector workers stop work today
 
Protests by public sector workers will go ahead today, as thousands face jobs cuts and cuts to conditions under the NSW Liberal Government.

Public Service Association of NSW general secretary John Cahill said that the anger of workers and their families about the threat of job loss and loss of rights is deep in the community, and will not be held back.

Since coming to office in March 2011, The O’Farrell Government has instructed all government departments to cut jobs, 15,000 in total.
 


Fair Work inspectors to make educational visits in Sydney CBD
 
The Fair Work Ombudsman will make educational visits to dozens businesses in Sydney’s CBD over the next two weeks.

Fair Work inspectors will be providing information packs to employers previously covered by the NSW industrial relations system but who are now under the national workplace relations system.

Fair Work Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson says the informal visits will assist employers to understand national workplace laws, including the National Employment Standards and Modern Awards.
 


Women in Construction congratulated
 
Victoria’s female construction workforce was celebrated last night, at the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Victoria and Tasmania Awards of Excellence.

Held at the Grand Hyatt, the awards recognised outstanding achievements, contributions or advancements by Women in Construction in 2012.

The NAWIC Excellence Awards are celebrated annually to recognise the significant contributions of women in the construction sector.



Fair Work Australia panel changes
 
Changes to Fair Work Australia's Panels list have been published.

The changes support coordination of work in the Tribunal’s road transport and waste management industries with work of the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal. Senior deputy president Acton will head a new panel, and other industry panels have been adjusted accordingly.

The changes take effect from today, 8 October 2012.

Insecure work phenomenon rising across globe: ACTU
 
A new report highlighting the growth of insecure work across the globe, released in time for World Day for Decent Work, is disturbing evidence that employers around the world are joining forces to erode workers’ rights and conditions through labour hire, say unions.

ACTU president Ged Kearney said the report, The Triangular Trap, showed insecure work had exploded rapidly in recent years, and was a global phenomenon that unions around the world were united in fighting against.

The report, completed by IndustriALL, a new international organisation made up by unions representing 50 million workers in 140 countries across the mining, energy and manufacturing sectors, showed between 1996 and 2009, the number of workers in labour hire and contract work had doubled. Labour hire agencies’ revenue has increased from $105 billion to $257 billion in the same period.

The Productivity Commission has estimated that a quarter of a million Australian workers are employed through labour hire.

‘This new report exposes how private employment agencies are lobbying governments around the world to cut workers’ rights and make it even easier to create more and more insecure work,’ Kearney said.
 
‘By its very definition, insecure work gives workers little control over their jobs and careers, with disastrous flow-on effects into the rest of their lives.’
