With the special return of federal parliament today, the government has proceeded with the reintroduction of its Registered Organisations bill – a potential double dissolution trigger – and the repeal of the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal bill.

The Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Amendment Bill 2014 [No. 3] has failed to pass the Senate twice previously – Industry Minister Christopher Pyne said in his second reading speech that the government has already moved a number of amendments  to “issues that were identified by Labor as problems”.

Minister Pyne said the disclosure requirements on officers and organisations have been aligned “more closely with longstanding governance and accountability provisions under the Corporations Act” so that the number of officers who will be required to make disclosures about their financial interests is “significantly reduced”.

The government also introduced today, as promised, two bills to repeal the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal and suspend any orders of the tribunal. The government is likely to see these bills passed, with the support of the cross-bench.

Industry Minister Pyne introduced the bills into the Senate, stating the government will redirect the $4 million a year spent on the Road Safety Remuneration System instead to the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
