A number of amendments have recently been made to the Industrial Chemicals (Notification and Assessment) Act 1989. As part of these amendments a Register of Chemical Introducers was established on 9 July 1997, requiring all companies (or persons) who import and/or manufacture relevant industrial chemicals above the prescribed threshold of $500 000 in a financial year to register and pay the applicable registration charge.
Under the Act, persons eligible for registration were required to register by 1 August 1997. The deadline for registration has been extended to 30 September 1997.
It is an offence under the Actfor an importer/manufacturer, who is eligible to register, to introduce industrial chemicals above the prescribed threshold if they are not registered.
