Today is the last day for employers to hand out the Howard Government's workplace fact sheet to their employees, or else they face a fine of $110 per employee.

Labor's IR spokeswoman, Julia Gillard has attacked the fact sheet regulations as unnecessary red tape for businesses.

'The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Council of Small Business have raised concerns about the confusing rules and the heavy handed penalties given a "sizeable number" of businesses have not yet complied,' she said. 'In May this year, the Howard Government changed its extreme WorkChoices laws to try and save its own political skin but Australian businesses have borne the burden.

'By the Howard Government's own admission, the so-called fairness test was devised to fix the perception of WorkChoices, not the unfairness.

Pre-election fix

'This short term, pre-election political fix announced in May has cost Australian taxpayers $66m in ads, bringing the grand total of WorkChoices ads to more than $121m.'

Gillard said this 'fix' has left businesses in a world of uncertainty and additional red tape.

'The so-called fairness test only applies to employees who signed a new agreement after 7 May 2007,' she said. 'But the Howard Government has demanded that every Australian employer hand the so-called fact sheet to each of their employees, even if it doesn't apply to them, within three months.

'This policy is anti-business in the extreme and to make matters worse, it was purely poll driven.'
