The provisions of the Workplace Relations Act 1996will be commencing at various times over the months ahead.

The Workplace Relations and Other Legislation Amendment Act 1996was assented to by the Governor-General on Monday, 25 November, 1996.

The Government is still working towards 1 February 1997 as the general commencement date. On the other hand, the intention is to have the Office of Employment Advocate up and running by 15 December 1996.

The federal award simplification process is likely to commence on 1 January 1997. Under the Act, all federal awards will be reduced to 20 core items. All other issues presently contained in awards will no longer be enforceable as of 1 January 1997, however, the award parties will have 18 months within which to physically remove those provisions from their award.
