Legislation to protect the entitlements for Sydney workers during the APEC holiday on Friday 7 September passed through the NSW Parliament last night.

NSW Industrial Relations Minister, John Della Bosca, said the legislation is necessary because not all awards and agreements recognise regional holidays.

‘These arrangements make it clear to all employers who are subject to State awards that the APEC holiday is to be treated like any other public holiday,’ he said. ‘This means that workers can have the day off and be paid, or if they have to work they should receive the appropriate penalty rates.’

Hockey urged to protect Federal system workers

Della Bosca said he had written to Federal Workplace Relations Minister, Joe Hockey, calling on him to introduce similar protection for workers under Federal awards and agreements.
