The NSW Industrial Relations Bill 1996 has seemingly passed the second reading speech committee stage in the Legislative Council in its odyssey through the NSW Parliament.

The Bill will now be read for a third time on Tuesday (28 May), unless the Committee is re-opened. Following the third reading speech, the Bill will proceed to the Legislative Assembly for the first and second reading speeches.

It is expected that the Bill would then emerge from the Assembly two weeks later. The Government is aiming for a 1 August commencement date. The additional time is required for the drafting and approval of regulations accompanying the Bill. The Legislative Council committee passed 55 amendments in total. All of these amendments were sponsored by the Coalition, except for two by the Call to Australia Party and two by the Government.
