The Industrial Relations Bill 1996 (NSW) looks no closer to being passed following the introduction of approximately 80 more amendments.

The Bill was introduced into the Legislative Council on 17 April 1996. The Opposition then put forward 83 amendments it proposed to make to the Bill. Only 9 of those amendments had been debated prior to this week.

When the debate recommenced on Tuesday, the Government expressed its hope that the Bill would pass through the Council by the end of this week, and enacted some time in June. However, the Opposition has introduced a further 80 odd amendments on behalf of the Employers’ Federation. This increase in the volume of amendments will naturally attract considerable debate, and with the Budget discussions occurring next week, a quick passage for the IR Bill looks decidedly unlikely.
