Carlton United Brewery is set to close its Broadway brewery in NSW and retrench 400 workers.

The NSW Labor Council said 40 brewery workers would lose their jobs in the next few months, another 60 by February 2004 and the remainder no later than 2005.

Labor Council Secretary John Robertson told WorkplaceInfo that, although Carlton United had a reasonable voluntary redundancy scheme in place, the key to helping workers find jobs elsewhere would be appropriate retraining and redeployment.

Robertson said details regarding what the Labor Council expected in the redundancy package would not be available until after union delegates met to discuss the issue tomorrow morning.

He said the Labor Council would focus its efforts on achieving appropriate redundancy and retraining packages and not on action that would stop the closure of the brewery.

Carlton United said it intended to close the brewery by February 2005. It would sell the Kent site for a minimum of $75 million, as part of an operational review that expected to achieve $100 million in efficiency gains over the next five years, it added.
